Does Arizona Have an Inheritance Tax?

No. Arizona does not impose an inheritance tax. Federal estate tax and income tax are separate questions.

Sources verified 2026-08-14. Federal amounts change by year.

The short answer

A beneficiary does not owe Arizona inheritance tax merely because they receive an inheritance.

The Arizona Department of Revenue also says Arizona does not impose a state estate tax or gift tax.

Do not mix these taxes

Arizona inheritance tax

None

No state tax on a beneficiary simply receiving an inheritance.

Arizona estate tax

None

No Arizona tax on the estate before distribution.

Federal estate tax

$15,000,000

Basic exclusion for estates of people who pass away in 2026; taxable gifts can affect the filing test.

When tax can still appear

The inherited asset later earns income

Interest, dividends, rent, and similar income produced after the transfer are generally taxable even though the inheritance itself was not. Inherited retirement accounts can also have separate distribution and income-tax rules.

The beneficiary later sells inherited property

A sale can create a capital gain or loss. The IRS says inherited property generally starts with a basis equal to fair market value on the date the person passed away, although exceptions and special valuation rules can change that result. Keep the appraisal and estate records that support the basis.

The estate has its own income

An estate can have federal and Arizona fiduciary income-tax filing duties while it is being administered. That is separate from an inheritance tax charged to the beneficiary.

A practical check

  1. Confirm what was inherited and whether it has produced income.
  2. Keep the date-of-passing valuation and any Schedule A from Form 8971.
  3. Check the federal estate-tax question separately if the estate is large or made substantial lifetime gifts.

Frequently asked questions

Does Arizona tax money or property I inherit?

Arizona does not impose an inheritance tax. An inheritance is also generally not included in federal taxable income, but later earnings, retirement-account distributions, or gain on a later sale can create income tax.

Is inheritance tax the same as estate tax?

No. An inheritance tax is charged to a beneficiary based on what that person receives. An estate tax is charged to the estate before distribution. Arizona imposes neither, but federal estate tax can apply to large estates.

Can inherited property create capital gains tax?

Yes. The inheritance itself is generally not income, but a later sale can create a taxable gain. The basis of inherited property is generally its fair market value on the date the person passed away, subject to exceptions.
